The former Ashanti Regional Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP), Mr Daniel Agyenim Boateng(Danny),have expressed worry on some lazy and shameful journalists who do not crosscheck their information before putting it out. He said most journalists want to be the first to break stories.
He said fake news over the years has been a serious issue in the country’s political spectrum and if not addressed could cause the Nation one day.
According to him, one of the main concerns of fake news stories is that, they can polarize the society.
His comments follows media reports indicating that the Presidency had directed CEOs of some eight public institutions to proceed on compulsory retirement.
The affected CEOs were Mr. Eugene Ofosuhene, 67 years, Controller and Accountant General, Mr. Maxwell Kofi Jumah, 68 years, CEO of Ghana Industrial Holding Corporation (GIHOC); Mr. Isaac Osei, 67 years, CEO of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR); Mr Kwame Owusu, 67 years, CEO of Ghana Maritime Authority and Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, 65 years, CEO of Forestry Commission.
The rest are Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, 65 years, Director General of Ghana Health Service, Dr. Samuel Annor, 64 years, CEO of National Health Insurance Authority and Mr. K.K. Sarpong, 65 years, CEO of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
The Government has dismissed widespread media reports that some Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of some State Institutions have been asked to step down by March this year by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Mr Boateng added that, the increase of fake news is 'a threat to democracy and undermines confidence in the media in general' and advised journalists to desist from it.
This distortion has consequences, he added.
Bad things can happen quickly, but good things aren’t built in a day, and as they unfold, they will be out of sync with the news cycle.
